GLM-5.3: the flagship for hard problems

GLM-5.3 is Z.ai's large reasoning model for complex software engineering and long-horizon agent tasks. It keeps the one-million-token context of GLM-5.2 and improves everything through post-training. You can use it free in our chat with a daily quota.

§ 02Overview

What GLM-5.3 is

Same base, better training

GLM-5.3 was listed on OpenRouter on 18 August 2026. Its model card is direct about where it comes from: GLM-5.3 uses the same base model as GLM-5.2, and "every gain comes from post-training". In other words, Z.ai did not change the architecture; it trained the model to be much better at complex coding and long tasks.

Z.ai reports a 50% improvement over GLM-5.2 on its in-house Z.ai Code Bench and claims open-source state-of-the-art results on public benchmarks such as Terminal Bench 3.0 and Agents' Last Exam. The card also notes an emergent strength in security research, with state-of-the-art results on CyberGym for vulnerability discovery. These are the developer's own measurements, so treat them as direction rather than proof.

Specifications

On OpenRouter, GLM-5.3 takes text input and produces text output, with a context window of 1,048,576 tokens and a maximum output of 943,718 tokens. Prices are $0.079 per million input tokens and $1.40 per million output tokens. On Z.ai's own platform the model code is glm-5.3, with a 1M context and up to 128K output tokens.

Reasoning is always on for GLM-5.3. You control how much it thinks with reasoning_effort, which accepts low, high and max; the model card says it defaults to max if you do not pass a value. The open weights are on Hugging Face as zai-org/GLM-5.3, under a custom GLM-5.3 licence rather than MIT — read the licence before you build a product on the weights.

GLM-5.3 in our chat

In the glm5.org chat GLM-5.3 runs with a low reasoning effort by default so answers arrive quickly. Turn on Think deeper to raise the effort when a problem deserves more care. GLM-5.3 is text only; if you attach a picture, the chat sends that message to GLM-5.3 Flash and tells you.

Because GLM-5.3 costs more to run than Flash, each visitor gets a limited number of GLM-5.3 messages per day. When the allowance runs out you can keep going with GLM-5.3 Flash in one click.

  • Best for: multi-file refactors, debugging, architecture questions, long analysis.
  • Not for: image questions (use GLM-5.3 Flash).
  • Tip: give it the full context — error messages, files, constraints — in one message.

§ 03Strengths

Where GLM-5.3 is strong

3.1

Complex coding

Z.ai calls GLM-5.3 the most capable open-weights model for coding, with large gains over GLM-5.2.

3.2

Long-horizon agents

Designed to plan and execute long tool-using tasks inside a 1M-token context.

3.3

Controllable thinking

Three reasoning effort levels let you trade speed for depth on each request.

3.4

Inexpensive input

At $0.079 per million input tokens on OpenRouter, feeding it large codebases is cheap.

§ 04How to try

Three ways to use GLM-5.3

  1. Chat free here

Open the chat, pick GLM-5.3 in the model switcher and ask. No account needed; a daily quota applies.

  2. Use the API

Call z-ai/glm-5.3 on OpenRouter or glm-5.3 on Z.ai's platform with any OpenAI-compatible client.

  3. Self-host the weights

Download zai-org/GLM-5.3 from Hugging Face, review the custom licence and serve it on your own hardware.

§ 06FAQ

GLM-5.3 questions

Q01Is GLM-5.3 free to use?

On glm5.org you can chat with GLM-5.3 for free without signing up, within a daily message quota. Through APIs it is billed per token.

Q02Can GLM-5.3 read images?

No. GLM-5.3 accepts text only. For image questions use GLM-5.3 Flash, which our chat selects automatically when you attach a picture.

Q03What licence does GLM-5.3 use?

The weights are published under a custom GLM-5.3 licence (listed as "other" on Hugging Face), not MIT. Check its terms before commercial use.

Q04How is GLM-5.3 different from GLM-5.2?

It uses the same base model; all improvements come from post-training. Z.ai reports a 50% gain on its in-house coding benchmark over GLM-5.2.

Q05What does Think deeper change for GLM-5.3?

It raises the reasoning effort from low to a higher level, so the model reasons longer before answering. Answers take more time but are usually more careful.
