GLM-5.2: a solid million-token context

GLM-5.2 is the GLM-5 model that made one million tokens of context dependable. It also introduced selectable reasoning effort and a more efficient attention design, and it is open weights under the MIT licence.

§ 02Overview

What is new in GLM-5.2

A context window you can lean on

GLM-5.2 was listed on OpenRouter on 16 June 2026 with a context window of 1,048,576 tokens and a maximum output of 943,718 tokens. Z.ai calls it a substantial leap in long-horizon capability over GLM-5.1 and says that, for the first time in the family, the capability holds on a "solid 1M-token context" that stably sustains long work.

A million tokens is roughly a large codebase, several long reports or hours of transcripts in one request. The practical benefit is that an agent can keep the whole project in view instead of summarising and forgetting.

IndexShare and faster decoding

Long context is expensive to serve, so GLM-5.2 changes the architecture. Z.ai proposes IndexShare, which reuses the same indexer across every four sparse-attention layers; the model card says this reduces per-token FLOPs by 2.9× at a one-million-token context length.

GLM-5.2 also improves its multi-token prediction (MTP) layer for speculative decoding, increasing the acceptance length by up to 20% according to Z.ai. Higher acceptance means more tokens are confirmed per step, which speeds up generation.

Flexible reasoning effort

GLM-5.2 adds multiple thinking effort levels so you can balance quality against latency. A quick lookup does not need the same reasoning budget as a tricky refactor. On OpenRouter the model accepts the reasoning and reasoning_effort parameters.

Prices on OpenRouter are unusual: about $0.034 per million input tokens and $7 per million output tokens. Reading huge inputs is cheap, while long answers cost more — worth keeping in mind for agent workloads that produce a lot of output.

  • Context: 1,048,576 tokens; maximum output: 943,718 tokens.
  • Open weights: zai-org/GLM-5.2, MIT licence.
  • Successor: GLM-5.3 uses the same base model with better post-training.

§ 03Strengths

Where GLM-5.2 is strong

3.1

Dependable 1M context

Built to stay stable on very long inputs, which matters for project-level coding and research.

3.2

Cheaper long attention

IndexShare cuts per-token compute by 2.9× at 1M tokens, according to Z.ai.

3.3

Selectable effort

Choose a lighter or heavier reasoning budget per request.

3.4

MIT open weights

Download zai-org/GLM-5.2 and run or fine-tune it under a permissive licence.

§ 04How to try

Three ways to use GLM-5.2

  1. Try the next version free

GLM-5.3 shares GLM-5.2's base model and runs in our chat. Start there to feel the family's long-context behaviour.

  2. Call z-ai/glm-5.2

Use OpenRouter with the reasoning parameter to pick an effort level.

  3. Run it yourself

Serve zai-org/GLM-5.2 from Hugging Face with a framework that supports its architecture.

§ 06FAQ

GLM-5.2 questions

Q01How long is GLM-5.2's context?

OpenRouter lists 1,048,576 tokens of context, with up to 943,718 output tokens per request.

Q02What is IndexShare?

It is an attention technique proposed by Z.ai in which one indexer is reused across every four sparse-attention layers. Z.ai reports a 2.9× reduction in per-token FLOPs at a 1M context.

Q03Is GLM-5.2 open source?

Its weights are public on Hugging Face as zai-org/GLM-5.2 under the MIT licence.

Q04Should I use GLM-5.2 or GLM-5.3?

GLM-5.3 is built on the same base model and Z.ai says it is much better at complex coding, so it is usually the better choice. GLM-5.2 keeps the permissive MIT licence, while GLM-5.3 uses a custom licence.
