GLM-5.1: built to keep working for hours

GLM-5.1 is the first update to GLM-5. Z.ai describes it as a major leap in coding, especially on long-horizon tasks where a model has to work on its own over many steps. It is open weights under the MIT licence.

§ 02Overview

What GLM-5.1 changed

From minutes to long sessions

GLM-5.1 was listed on OpenRouter on 7 April 2026. Its description makes a specific point: earlier models were built around minute-level interactions, while GLM-5.1 is meant to work independently and continuously on a task. The Hugging Face card puts it this way — the model "sustains optimization over hundreds of rounds and thousands of tool calls".

In practice that means the kind of work an engineer hands to an agent: break a problem down, run an experiment, read the result, find what blocks progress and try again. Z.ai says GLM-5.1 handles ambiguous problems with better judgment and stays productive over longer sessions than GLM-5.

Specifications

On OpenRouter, GLM-5.1 has a context window of about 205K tokens and can return up to about 131K tokens per request. It accepts text and returns text. Pricing is $1.40 per million input tokens and $4.40 per million output tokens, a little higher than the original GLM-5.

The weights are published on Hugging Face as zai-org/GLM-5.1 under the MIT licence. Z.ai does not list a separate parameter count for GLM-5.1 on the card, so we do not quote one here.

Where GLM-5.1 fits today

GLM-5.1 was the long-horizon specialist of spring 2026. Since then GLM-5.2 has extended the context to about one million tokens and GLM-5.3 has improved coding further on the same base as GLM-5.2. For most new work, those newer models are the better default.

GLM-5.1 still makes sense if you already run it in an agent stack and your prompts are tuned for it, or if you want an MIT-licensed long-horizon model with a smaller context footprint. As always, test it on your real workload before switching.

  • Choose GLM-5.1 for long agent loops where 205K tokens of context is enough.
  • Choose GLM-5.2 or GLM-5.3 when you need a one-million-token window.
  • Choose GLM-5.3 Flash when cost and speed matter more than peak quality.

§ 03Strengths

Where GLM-5.1 is strong

3.1

Long-horizon coding

Z.ai built GLM-5.1 to keep improving a solution across hundreds of rounds and thousands of tool calls.

3.2

Better judgment on vague tasks

The model card highlights how it breaks down ambiguous problems and identifies blockers precisely.

3.3

MIT open weights

Download zai-org/GLM-5.1 and use it commercially under a permissive licence.

3.4

Tool calling

On OpenRouter it supports tools and structured outputs, the building blocks of an agent loop.

§ 04How to try

Three ways to use GLM-5.1

  1. Compare with GLM-5.3 free

GLM-5.1 is not in our chat, but its successor GLM-5.3 is. Try your coding task there first.

  2. Use the API

Call z-ai/glm-5.1 on OpenRouter with any OpenAI-compatible SDK and connect it to your agent framework.

  3. Self-host

Download zai-org/GLM-5.1 from Hugging Face and serve it with a framework such as vLLM or SGLang.

§ 06FAQ

GLM-5.1 questions

Q01Is GLM-5.1 better than GLM-5?

For long, multi-step coding tasks Z.ai says it is a major improvement. It keeps the same context size on OpenRouter (about 205K tokens) and costs a little more per token.

Q02Is GLM-5.1 open weights?

Yes. It is on Hugging Face as zai-org/GLM-5.1 under the MIT licence.

Q03What is GLM-5.1's context window?

OpenRouter lists 204,800 tokens of context and up to 131,072 output tokens per request.

Q04Can I try GLM-5.1 on glm5.org?

Not directly. Our free chat runs GLM-5.3 Flash and GLM-5.3, the newer models of the same family.
